Gas Emergency Advice

If you smell gas, think you have a gas leak, or worry that fumes containing carbon monoxide are escaping from a gas appliance, call the Gas Emergency Services immediately.

EMERGENCY SAFETY

  • ventilate the property by opening all doors and windows
  • leave electrical switches alone - DO NOT TURN THEM ON or OFF
  • extinguish all naked flames - do not smoke, strike matches or do anything that may cause ignition
  • open doors with electrical security entry phones or locks manually

WHAT IS CARBON MONOXIDE?

Carbon monoxide gas is very poisonous and can kill very quickly. It has no colour, smell or taste and is the reason it is sometimes known as the "silent killer".

WHAT CAUSES CARBON MONOXIDE TO BE PRODUCED?

  • gas appliances not installed or maintained properly
  • broken gas appliances which do not work properly
  • blockages in flues or chimneys
  • poorly ventilated rooms

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING?

  • similar to flu - tiredness, headaches, nausea, chest or stomach pains, faintness, erratic behaviour, diarrhoea
